Here the State is the Master and all citizens are slaves, dictated to on every aspect of their lives, from schooling through marriage to the amount of clothes they owned and even how they were folded and placed in cupboards and drawers! Woe betide anyone who has a visit from the Man from the Ministry &Ellie has failed to become pregnant within the regulated two year period. The Man from the Ministry has visited and she and her husband Jack are taken away to the Centre, there to be subjected to humiliating and painful tests and forced to have sex under the watchful eye and sometimes with the assistance of Centre staff! They have three months in which to create a pregnancy, otherwise the devoted couple will be split up and sent off to the dreaded Labour Camps!
