Arthur Hugh Clough (1819-1861) was the son of a Liverpool cotton merchant and moved to South Carolina when he was four. He returned to England to study at Rugby School and Balliol College, Oxford and was elected to a fellowship at Oriel College before resigning on religious grounds and travelling to Paris and Rome.
