Michael Ayers is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford and Fellow of Wadham College. He has written many articles on 17th- and 18th-century philosophy and in 1991 published Locke, a two-volume commentary on Locke's An Essay concerning Human Understanding. Unlike many writers on the subject, he combines historical and philosophical approaches to the text.
