Book description
The fate of kings is not always glorious. Indeed, England's Edward II
so angered his wife, her lover, and his subjects when he flaunted his
male favorites that they revolted, deposed him, and made him prisoner.
History records Edward II was eventually murdered in Berkeley Castle and
buried publicly in Gloucester cathedral. But was he? The heir, Edward
III, charges Chancery Clerk Edmund Beche with uncovering the truth of
the matter. Beche's investigation is torturous, blocked by hidden
records, outright lies, unexpected confessions, double crosses, and a
high body count. Grave-digging, burglary, and soldiering at the bloody
battle of Crécy await him. But he's a most determined man.... Paul
Doherty was born in Middlesbrough (North-Eastern England). He went to
Liverpool University and then worked in Ascot, Nottingham and Crawley
West Sussex before being appointed as Headmaster to Trinity Catholic.
Paul's other incarnation is as a novelist. He finished his doctorate on
the reign of Edward II of England and, in 1987, began to publish a
series of outstanding historical mysteries set in the Middle Age,
Classical, Greek, Ancient Egypt and elsewhere. He has been published
under several pseudonyms: C. L. Grace, Paul Harding, Ann Dukthas and
Anna Apostolou but now writes only under his own name. He has also
written several non-fiction titles. Paul lectures for a number of
organisations, particularly on historical mysteries, many of which later
feature in his writings. Paul and his wife, Carla, live on the borders
of London and Essex.
