Fowler began publishing science fiction with 'Recalling Cinderella' in L Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future , Vol I , and caused considerable stir in the SF field with her first assured collection, Artificial Things . The collection helped her win the 1987 John W Campbell Award for Best New Writer and her short story collection Black Glass won the World Fantasy Award in 1999. She achieved widespread recognition for 2004's The Jane Austen Book Club , which was filmed in 2007. Karen Joy Fowler lives in California.
