He was educated there and in Cambridge, where he took his PhD. He specializes in eighteenth-century France and the French Revolution, and has lived and taught in Lyon and Paris. He is currently Reader in History at the University of Bradford. His previous book, The Fall of the French Monarchy was shortlisted for the Woolfson History Prize
