Jane Goodall has spent most of her life observing the Chimpanzees of Gombe. This sequel to the bestselling "In The Shadow of Man" proves to be even more extraordinary and is as captivating a story of any human community. Jane Goodall was born in 1934 in London. In 1960 she set out on pioneer field study of the wild chimpanzees in the Gombe National Park, Tanzania, which has since become the longest continuous field project on record. In 1965 she earned a doctorate in ethology from Cambridge University, and in the following years became famous through the many publications and television documentaries of the National Geographic Society, an early supporter of her work at Gombe. Currently, she focuses much of her energy on the dual goals of promoting conservation of wild chimpanzees and improving conditions for those in captivity; the Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation has branches in Tanzania, the United States, Canada, Germany and Great Britain. Her many honorary degrees and awards include the Order of the Golden Ark of the Netherland, the J. Paul Getty Wildlife Conservation Prize from the World Wildlife Fund, the Kyoto Prize in the basic science category and the National Geographic Hubbard Award. Jane Goodall's books about chimpanzees include Through a Window and In the Shadow of Man, and the highly praisd professional volume Chimpanzees of Gombe: Patterns of Behaviour. She was awarded the CBE in 1995 for her work with chimpanzees and in conservation education.
