Book description
Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have
transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have
inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened,
outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives - and
destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers,
pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization, and
helped make us who we are. Thomas Paine was born in1737 at Thetford,
Norfolk in England, as a son of a Quaker. He immigrated to America in
1774. There he published works criticising the slavery and supporting
American independence. He became very popular but returned to England
where he became involved in the French Revolution. After that he
returned to America where he died in 1802.
