Beautiful Kate Long absent son Ned Kendall, has returned home for the first time in 20 years to visit his younger sister, Sally, and overbearing father, Bruce, who is dying. His homecoming triggers the memories and buried guilt he has for the death of his twin sister Kate and his older brother who died those many years ago. Ned and Bruce’s viscous and antagonising relationship has deepened as a result of the mystery surrounding these deaths but no one has grasped the full story or complexity of what occurred that summer.
The script, originally adapted from a book by the American novelist Newton Thornburg, has been transported locally into a bleak setting in the South Australian bush. Described by Director Rachel Ward as a ‘gothic love story’, Beautifiul Kate is a haunting tale of empathy, forgiveness and redemption.
